If you have Windows 10 Pro file encryption is built in. If you have the home version, and want to encrpt a file, you are out of luck. Today we’ll show you how to encrypt your files with AxCrypt.
AxCrypt has been around for 15 years or so. Version 2 was released in 2016 and there are Mac, Android, and IOS versions as well. It features 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption. You can download it here.
We got it downloaded and when it is installing it will ask you for your email address. AxCrypt will send you an access code. You will use it in conjunction with setting your password. You need to take this step seriously. This is not like your facebook password. If you forget your password you will not be able to access you files. In fact you have to promise you won’t forget it before use. Choose wisely.
Encrypt your files with AxCrypt
Once you add a password, swear not to forget your password, and clicking the ok disclaimer, you are ready to encrypt. From the menu choose: File – Secure. This will bring up your file explorer. Browse and find the file you want to with AxCrypt. A green progress bar at the bottom of the window will show you AxCrypt is busy encrypting your file. Once your file in encrypted it will show up in the resent files tab.
AxCrypt has made a video to help get you started.
We tried a few other encryption programs for Windows but we decided to recommend that you encrypt your files with AxCryp. The free version of AxCrypt is not as feature rich as some of the other programs we tested. However it’s overall ease of use and the ability to use AxCrypt’s basic features for free while additional features are available via subscription, make AxCrypt our choice.
